Qualia Explained

What are Qualia? How do they become conscious?–a mystery referred to as the “hard question” of science. But perhaps a more fundamental question is that of how and why mind exists in the first place–in what would appear to be a materialistic universe. Well, it turns out that consciousness is intrinsically linked to mass and energy and the conversion of one into the other by an image!

Immersion into an image would be meaningless apart from the light of self–i.e., the presence of God. But only if God is the light in whom we live and move, as encoded within neural design, can an image and the brain’s capacity for blending multiple qualia into an image have a logical, self illuminating strategy. Indeed, it is the equivalence between the anticipation of infinity and a regressive probabilistic change toward being “too small for one’s britches” that allows the self to see itself as contrastingly finite–with a match with the expectable finitude of an image being the means by which regression and equivalent disorder are contained.

In a universe that is fundamentally conscious and God-centered, an image represents the interface between order and disorder–and represents, actually is, a conviction of energy sufficiency relative to infinity as encoded within the brain. “Conviction” and “immersion” prove to be thermodynamically identical. Both are a function of the successful narrowing of an expectancy gap, implicit to which is one’s potential nonexistence — and against the infinitude of which the self sees itself as finite.

Qualia become conscious solely as components of an image, the immersive wholeness of which, being fused with an awareness of the entire body, sustains the body mass. The longer of my two recent books (Journey) explains how the qualia of an image enter the limbic brain to then be bound into a singular immersive image. The overall process conserves energy — essentially by the expectable and matchable finitude of an image. But only if God, not matter, is fundamental — and an image is the actual event, the very process of containing the Second Law.

E = mc2 expresses the success by which energy conversion kinetically (muscle movement) creates a match (an image). And the fact that information streaming into the brain is not only visual but includes sensory data from every cubic millimeter of the body is the clincher revealing an inviolable bonding between consciousness, energy, mass and light.

See the Homepage for access to the two books (soon, three) which explain the anatomical, physiological and biochemical details of this new and exciting God-centered perspective.

About Glenn Dudley

GLENN DUDLEY became interested in the mind-body problem as a Pre-Med student at the University of Colorado where he emphasized studies in physics, philosophy, and Judeo-Christian theology. He received his M.D. degree from the University of Colorado in 1969. After a mixed Psychiatry/Medicine internship, he worked for two years at MIT's Neurosciences Research Program -- a think tank whose objective was that of understanding how the hard-wiring of the nervous system mediates thought and emotion. Then, he spent a year in the Department of Psychiatry at Tufts Medical School in Boston reviewing the world's literature on psychological and emotional predispositions to cancer. From 1975 to his retirement in 1998 he practiced primary care medicine.
